Crytek Announces Royalty-Free CryEngine Licensing Subscription Plan

by Kyle Hilliard on Mar 19, 2014 at 03:33 PM

Today, Crytek announced its "Engine-as-a-Service" (EaaS) program, which allows developers to take advantage of its CryEngine technology and development tools for a monthly fee.

The service will begin in May of this year, and will offer multiple tiers of service. The first tier will offer access for $9.90 a month and developers will have access to the engine without the necessity of a royalty fee attached to sold games. Crytek is promising more details on the service in the near future. You can find out more, including exactly what tools will be available, by heading to the CryEngine website.

Earlier today, Epic announced a similar plan for its Unreal Engine 4 for $19.99 a month with a 5% royalty fee. You can read more about that announcement here.

Our Take
Unreal Engine 4 might have to rethink its licensing plan if Crytek is offering a similar plan for half the price without the royalty fee. The good news is, the competition amongst all of these video game engine licensers means it will only be cheaper to develop good-looking games on a smaller scale as we move forward.
